There are various types of air storage tanks, which can be categorized in several ways. Based on installation method, they are commonly classified as vertical or horizontal tanks. Vertical tanks typically have a smaller footprint, making them suitable for factories or equipment rooms with limited space, and they offer convenient bottom drainage. Horizontal tanks are generally longer and require more installation space, but they are easier to install and maintain, and are frequently found in large-scale compressed air systems.

Tanks can also be classified by operating pressure and storage capacity into low-pressure, medium-pressure, and high-pressure categories. Since different equipment requires different operating pressures, the design pressure of the tanks varies accordingly. In standard factory compressed air systems, the appropriate tank is selected based on the air compressor's operating pressure and actual air consumption. High air consumption necessitates a larger storage capacity to ensure a sufficient supply of compressed air during periods of peak demand and to minimize significant system pressure fluctuations.

Based on application, tanks can be categorized into standard compressed air storage tanks, industrial gas storage tanks, and specialized storage equipment. Standard tanks are primarily used to store compressed air generated by air compressors and are commonly found in settings such as machining, automotive repair, and automated manufacturing. Industrial gas storage tanks require materials and structural designs tailored to the specific properties of the gas being stored; for instance, if a gas is corrosive, the tank's corrosion resistance becomes a critical factor. In summary, the type of air storage tank is determined by factors such as installation method, operating pressure, storage capacity, and intended use; the actual selection should be based on the specific operating environment and equipment requirements.
